Analog mixing and mastering process

Transform your raw recordings into radio-ready masterpieces for 250 €/track. Crafted by experts using premium analog and digital tools.

The Crucial Role of Mixing and Mastering

Recording is only the first half of the music creation journey. Once the instruments and vocals are captured, they must be blended, balanced, and polished to achieve a professional sound. This is where mixing and mastering come into play. Mixing is the art of taking individual multitrack recordings—the kick drum, the bassline, the synths, the lead vocals, the harmonies—and blending them together into a cohesive, exciting, and emotionally impactful stereo file. Mastering is the final step, providing the overall polish, loudness optimization, and technical formatting required for commercial distribution on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and vinyl records. At Bivinylfiora in Madrid, we approach these two distinct processes with the utmost care, ensuring your artistic vision translates perfectly across all playback systems.

Our team, featuring mixing specialists and our dedicated Mastering Specialist, Diego Ramos, brings years of critical listening experience to your project. We operate out of our meticulously treated Control Room, a space designed for acoustic neutrality. When we make an EQ decision, we know it will translate to car stereos, club sound systems, and budget earbuds alike. We do not just apply generic presets; we dive deep into the emotional core of your song, using dynamics and frequency balance to enhance the narrative you have created.

Our Hybrid Mixing Approach

At Bivinylfiora, we believe in the power of a hybrid workflow. We combine the surgical precision, recallability, and infinite possibilities of digital audio workstations (DAWs) and top-tier plugins with the undeniable warmth, punch, and character of analog hardware. This hybrid approach gives us the best of both worlds, allowing us to deliver mixes that are both technically flawless and musically vibrant.

Our SSL Console is at the heart of our mixing process. Running tracks through the SSL provides a classic analog summing experience, gluing the mix together and adding a subtle, musical saturation that digital algorithms struggle to replicate perfectly. We utilize the console's legendary bus compressor to add punch and cohesion to drum groups and the entire mix bus. Additionally, we integrate outboard Neve preamps and custom hardware EQs to breathe life into sterile digital recordings.

In the digital realm, we use a vast array of industry-standard plugins for precise frequency shaping, transient control, and spatial effects. Whether you need a vintage plate reverb for an indie rock vocal, a massive stereo chorus for an 80s synth-pop track, or surgical dynamic EQ to tame a harsh cymbal, we have the tools and the expertise to execute your vision. We monitor exclusively on Genelec speakers, renowned for their brutal honesty and flat frequency response, ensuring no detail escapes our attention.

The Bivinylfiora Mixing and Mastering Process

We have refined our workflow to be as collaborative and transparent as possible. When you entrust us with your mix and master, here is the journey your music takes:

  1. File Preparation and Stem Delivery: You provide us with the consolidated, labeled multitrack files (stems) of your project. We review the files to ensure everything is aligned, free of clicks and pops, and ready for mixing. We also request reference tracks from you to understand the sonic direction you are aiming for.
  2. Static Mix and Balancing: The first step in mixing is the static mix. We adjust the volume and panning of every track to create a solid foundation. This is where the initial balance of power between the kick, bass, and vocal is established.
  3. EQ and Dynamics: We use equalizers to carve out space for each instrument, preventing frequency masking and mud. Compressors and limiters are applied to control dynamics, add punch, and shape the transient response of individual elements.
  4. Spatial Enhancement and Effects: We add dimension and depth using reverbs, delays, choruses, and stereo widening tools. This creates the three-dimensional soundstage that makes modern records sound huge.
  5. Automation: To keep the mix exciting from start to finish, we use automation. We ride the vocal fader so every word is intelligible, push the guitars during the chorus for impact, and mute unnecessary background noise.
  6. Mastering: Once the mix is approved, Diego Ramos takes over for mastering. He ensures the track meets the loudness standards for streaming platforms without sacrificing dynamic range. He applies final broad-stroke EQ, multiband compression, and limiting to provide the ultimate commercial sheen.

Pricing, Revisions, and Delivery

We offer our comprehensive Mixing and Mastering service at a flat rate of 250 € per track (302.50 € with 21% IVA). This transparent pricing model means there are no hidden fees or surprise hourly charges. You know exactly what your budget needs to be upfront. To begin the project, we require a 50% deposit.

We understand that mixing is a subjective process, and your satisfaction is our priority. That is why our flat rate includes up to 2 rounds of revisions. After we send you the initial mix, you can listen to it on your familiar systems—your car, your headphones, your home stereo—and provide us with a list of adjustments. We will implement these changes promptly.

We guarantee a rapid initial response time of 24 hours to all inquiries. Once the final master is approved, we deliver the files in all standard formats required for modern distribution, including 24-bit/48kHz WAV files for streaming, 16-bit/44.1kHz WAV files for CD, and high-quality MP3s for easy sharing. We also keep a secure backup of your mix sessions and final masters in our archive for 6 months, ensuring you have access to your files if you ever lose them.

FAQ: Mixing & Mastering

What is the difference between mixing and mastering?

Mixing involves taking all individual tracks (vocals, guitars, drums) and adjusting their levels, panning, EQ, and effects to sound good together. Mastering takes that single mixed stereo file and prepares it for distribution by optimizing overall loudness, EQ balance, and formatting, ensuring it sounds consistent across all listening environments.

How should I export my tracks for mixing?

Please bypass any effects on your master bus before exporting. Export all individual tracks starting from exactly the same time (bar 1, beat 1) so they align perfectly in our DAW. Ensure tracks are not clipping and are clearly labeled (e.g., "Kick In", "Lead Vocal", "Synth Bass").

Can you mix a track I recorded at home?

Yes! Many of our clients record at home and send us the files for professional mixing and mastering. We can often use tools like noise reduction and advanced EQ to clean up home recordings and give them a professional studio sound.

Do I need to attend the mixing session?

Most of our mixing clients work remotely, communicating via email or phone. However, if you are in Madrid and prefer to be present for the final tweaks, you are welcome to book time to sit in our Control Room and finalize the mix with us in person.
